John H. Tuthill was born in Orange Co, New York, Jan. 24, 1804. He was married to Catharine J Sow July 22, 1825, in Orange Co. He was the father of nine children, three of whom are dead. About thirty years ago he moved from New York to Epworth, Dubuque Co., Iowa and later to Farley in the same county. There his wife died in Feb ‘y 1871 and he afterward married Mrs. Esther Pratt with whom he moved to Mr. Ayr in Sep. 1884, and who still survives him, lonely in her aged widowhood. His death occurred March 12, 1889. When fourteen years of age he was apprenticed to a wagon-maker, and he continued in this position until he was twenty-one. This occupation and various other kinds of work in wood he followed a great part of his life. His was a long and useful life. He was converted when about twenty years old and for about two years was a member of the Presbyterian Church, but afterward joined the M.E. Church in which he continued till his death; nearly all the years of his Christian life as class-leader. How many souls he has helped onward toward heaven, no earthly record can show, but “he shall in no way lose his reward.” Only the last few years of this noble life were spent in Mt. Ayr but in these he was a blessing to the church and community. For many years he has exerted the influence of a Godly life and now the memory of his life is a blessing to others. He has gone on into the company of those who are “before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.” The funeral service was held on Thursday the 14th, at the M.E. Church, after which the remains were taken to Farley, Iowa for burial.
