Nancy Roby died at her residence in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, December 24, 1888, Mrs. Nancy Roby, in her seventy-sixth year. Grandma Roby, as she was familiarly known, was born in Butler county Ohio, August 25, 1812. Her maiden name was Davis. Here she lived until she reached womanhood, and was married to Raymond Roby October 25, 1837. They moved to Union county, Indiana, the following year, and lived in Indiana till 1855, when they moved to Union county, Indiana, the following year, and lived in Indiana till 1855, when they moved with their family of six children to Wayne county, Iowa which was then considered the far west, and where, in January, 1860, her husband died, leaving her in straitened pecuniary circumstances and a family of small children to provide for. Here she lived and toiled until her children to provide for. Here she lived and toiled until her children were grown, when she moved to Mt. Ayr in 1865, where she lived until her death, and where her family, with the exception of one son, still remains. Grandma Roby was a woman of more than ordinary strength of Christian character, and was a great lover of her church and Bible, having been a member of the Christian church fifty-eight years. To her earnestness and zeal is largely due the establishing of the church of the Disciples in Mt. Ayr. She died surrounded by her children and grandchildren and friends of long years’ standing, who had long known and loved her for her many Christian virtues. It could be truthfully said of her that her last days were her best days,” as her health was such that she was permitted to attend church with great regularity, which with the society of her children was the great comfort of her declining years. Thus another mother in Israel is gone, an empty chair in her old home, a vacant seat in the little church which she loved so well to attend.
