TRACTOR ACCIDENT FATAL TO MARY ANN MERCER

Mrs. Darrel (Mary Ann) MERCER, 28, of Diagonal was killed instantly Wednesday morning of this week about 8:30 a.m. when a tractor over-turned on her at the Mercer home on the Virgil Hays farm north of Diagonal on the High and Dry Road.

The Mercers were pulling posts with Mrs. Mercer operating the tractor when it over-turned on her. Workmen doing the grading on the High and Dry helped to move the tractor.

Mrs. Mercer is survived by her husband and three children, Robert, 8, Patricia, 7, and Diane, 3. She was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph OSHEL, who survive, with a sister, Mrs. Larry ARMSTRONG of Diagonal, and a brother, Larry, serving with the Army.

Mr. and Mrs. Will SICKELS of Diagonal are the maternal grandparents.

Dr. Duane MITCHELL of Mount Ayr was called to the scene of the accident, and the body was brought to the Varner-Crew Funeral Home in Diagonal.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

OBITUARY - MRS. DARREL MERCER

Mary Ann, daughter of Ralph and Helen (SICKELS) OSHEL, was born March 29, 1938 in Ringgold county, Iowa, and passed away Wednesday, August 17, 1966 at her home north of Diagonal, Iowa.

Nearly all of her short life was spent in Ringgold county where she attended school in Benton and also in Diagonal where she graduated from high school.

On November 10, 1957 she was united in marriage to Darrel MERCER with three children born to this union. They are Robert Dwane, Patricia Ann, and Diane Jayne. The first three years of the marriage was spent in Louisiana where the husband was serving with the armed forces. After this they returned to Iowa.

Besides her husband and three children she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph OSHEL, a sister, Sherri (Mrs. Larry ARMSTRONG) of Diagonal, and a brother, Larry, of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Other survivors are her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Will SICKELS of Diagonal, her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence MERCER of Kellerton, a grand-mother-in-law, Mrs. Emma JOHNSON. Also nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins, five brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John OSHEL Sr.

Mary Ann was baptized and married in the Diagonal Christian church where she was an active member. The members of her family, which she loved dearly, came first with her always. She shall be sorely missed in her home, by the members of her family, and all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, August 20, 1966 from the Diagonal Christian Church with the pastor the Rev. Gareth BIRCH in charge.

Mrs. Margaret PENCE of Mount Ayr was the pianist and accompanist for Mrs. Elbert STRANGE, also of Mount Ayr, soloist.

Casketbearers were Charles PETERSON, Alan Lee OSHEL, Jimmy OSHEL, Duane PINE, Jack CARSON, William TRIDLE, Ricky OSHEL, David WILEY, Ivan SOBOTKA, and Lloyd PARKER. Burial was in the Diagonal cemetery.
