Joanna Sue Cady
July 6, 1928 - September 27, 2017

Joanna Sue Cady, 89, of Medford, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at her care home. Joanna was born July 6, 1928 to Samuel Herman and Mabel Ruth (Lusted) Treichler in Ellston, Iowa.

Mrs. Cady grew up in Kellerton, Iowa where she started using her middle name, Sue, to avoid confusion with another girl named Joanne. Sue graduated from Kellerton High School in 1946 and went on to study at Iowa State Teachers College (now U. of N. Iowa). She earned her teachers certificate, then returned to Kellerton to teach in a one-room rural schoolhouse. In 1951 she decided to move to Ashland, Oregon to pursue her B.S. degree in Education at what is now Southern Oregon University. That summer she met John J. Cady in archery class. They dated steadily through fall term and were married December 30, 1951 in the Methodist Church of Ashland. After starting a family (three sons) she returned to Southern Oregon to earn her Bachelor’s degree in 1958 with son number four on the way! Sue later returned to college to earn her Master’s degree in Education in 1966.

Mrs. Cady taught third grade at Lincoln Elementary School for 25 years. She was also a faculty member of Southern Oregon, teaching college students to become the next generation of teachers. Sue retired from teaching in 1986 to pursue her love of travel with her husband, John. They traveled extensively throughout North America, and even Europe, to visit family. From 1989 to 1999, they enjoyed a ‘snowbird’ lifestyle, spending summers at their coast get-away in Brookings, Ore. and traveling to Yuma, Arizona to be with friends in the winter. They returned to the Rogue Valley in 2000 to be closer to family.

Mrs. Cady was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, the Brookings First Presbyterian Church, and the Central Point First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of AAUW, Eastern Star, and the Retired Teachers Association. She loved and was much loved by family, friends, and the communities she lived in. She will always be remembered for her abundant smiles and encouragement she gave to everyone.

Survivors include four sons, John Kimmbal, Sutherlin, James Richard, Fenton, Michigan, William Robert, Hubbard, and Michael Wayne, Medford; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John and two brothers, Samuel and William.

A memorial service for Mrs. Cady will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Central Point. Pastor Terry Graunke will officiate at the service. Private inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Schools Foundation, 100 Walker Avenue, Ashland, OR 97520 or the First Presbyterian Church, Deacon’s Fund, 456 W. Pine St., Central Point, OR 97502. Arrangements in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
