OBITUARY ~ DONALD K. "DON" MEADOWS
June 05, 1930 ~ January 26, 2017

Donald K. Meadows, 86, died Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Calvin Community. Donald had deeded his body to the University of Iowa Medical School. A Celebration of Don's life will be held at a later date.

Donald was born June 5, 1930 in Kellerton to Weldon and Louise (Davis) Meadows. He was followed by Roland, Janice and Ann. After graduating from High School in 1947 he enrolled in AIB, and graduated two years later. In January of 1952 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served during the Korean War. In September of 1954, utilizing the GI Bill, he entered the University of Iowa. While there he met and married Virginia Taylor, a Registered Nurse at the University Hospital. He graduated in February of 1958 with a major in Accounting. The couple moved to Des Moines where they had three children: Michael, Brent and Laura. Don worked as a CPA for 37 years, retiring in 1995 from the State Auditor's Office.

Don's first employer encouraged the volunteering of his time to not-for-profit activities. Over the years he helped with Iowa Public Radio, Iowa Public Television, Foreign Food Fair, Planned Parenthood Book Sale, and several athletic runs.

In 1974 he became interested in bicycling and he acquired the first of many bicycles. In 1977 he participated in his first RAGBRAI, the first of many. In September of 1982, he began to run and it took him one month to run one mile. By the end of the year the distance for runs was up to three. He never intended to run a marathon but in 1987 he ran his first. After retiring in 1995 he rode in the Iowa Sesquicentennial Expedition (The Iowa 150). He continued both activities until after 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; children: Michael (Tina) Meadows of Urbandale, Brent (Beverly) Meadows of Tennessee, Laura (Mike) Beals of Indianola; grandchildren: Joshua (Grace) Meadows, Caitlin Meadows, Ethan Meadows, Kelly Meadows, Justin Beals, Matthew Beals; sisters: Janice (Skip) Farley, Ann Dunshee. Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roland.
