OBITUARY ~ MAC ELBERT CROSS
September 28, 1941 ~ April 12, 2018

Mac Elbert Cross, son of Ames R. and Elberta R. (McKinstry) Cross, “was born at a very young age” on September 28, 1941 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Mac graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1960. Mac enjoyed camping and riding his horse, Sparkle, on trail rides with friends. One time, Mac and friends went by horse and buggy, along with three dogs, from Mount Ayr to Diagonal to visit his grandparents. Mac enjoyed racing cars at the local race track, racing number 13. From a very early age Mac started working at the family business which fueled his passion for the car business.

Mac attended AIB college and graduated with an Accounting degree. Mac worked a few years as an Accountant. In 1963, he enlisted in the Army branch of the National Guard where he was honorably discharged after six years.

On March 27, 1971, Mac married the love of his life, Pamela Ann Johnson, and to this union three daughters were born, Jody, Niky and Lory. Mac and Pam lived in Des Moines, Iowa for two years and then made their home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Mac started working for his father-in-law at Andy Johnson Chevrolet in 1973. He continued in the car business for 34 years working at Jim Jobe Chevrolet and retiring from Glendenning Motor Co. in 2006. Mac was not a stranger to anyone. His one-of-a-kind personality left a lasting impression to all that he met.

Mac enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing. He loved to entertain people whether at home, at the Peter’s shed, the Golf Course, Lefty’s, the American Legion, or at the Lodge. Mac will always be remembered for his jokes, his laughter, and his late night egg sandwiches.

Mac’s greatest passion were his wife, children, and grandchildren. Mac and Pam enjoyed spending time with close friends whether it be at the Country Club or each other’s homes, and spending Sunday nights with Lefty and Cleola Geist. He never missed any of his girls events, always cheering them on, videotaping and providing constant support. He welcomed his three sons-in-law, David, Scott, and James and enjoyed spending time with them hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and having a few cold ones. The love Mac had for his grandchildren was priceless. Saturday morning donuts, playing basketball, fishing, and long walks were some of their greatest memories. We all agree he was the BEST GRANDPA EVER!

Late in his life, Mac became a resident of Clearview Nursing Home. The love and care he received over the last four plus years has been beyond words. Mac’s one-of-a-kind personality, his smile, his signature wave, his ornery tactics, and love of walks while holding your hand touched the lives of so many.

Mac passed away on April 13, 2018 at Clearview Nursing home with one of his closest caretakers by his side.

Those left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Pam; three daughters, Jody (David) Greene of Mount Ayr, Niky (Scott) Taylor of Waukee, IA, and Lory (James) Stewart of Prole, IA; seven grandchildren Ashlie (Jake) Allspach, Shelbie Greene, Myles Greene, Jaxson Greene, Brittlyn Taylor, Duke Taylor, and Skylyr Stewart; two great-granddaughters, Avery Allspach and Saylor Allspach; brothers, Ron Cross of Urbandale, IA, Al Cross of Urbandale, IA; brother-in-law Scott (Cindy) Johnson of Ankeny, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless close friends.
