OBITUARY ~ LARRY DALE SCHAD
October 16, 1946 ~ August 11, 2017

Larry Dale Schad, son of Earle M. and Althea R. Schad, was born October 16,1946 at a rural home in Fontanelle, Iowa. He grew up with his brother Gary on the farm outside of Shannon City, Iowa. Larry graduated from East Union High School in Afton, Iowa in 1965 (their class motto was: Life is not measured by the time we live).

Larry married his high school sweetheart, Judith “Judy ” Ann Abbott, on August 21, 1966. To this Union was three children: Brenda, Ricky, and Jody. In 1966, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy sailing aboard the USS Independence for four years. He was very proud of his service to his country. After his military service, he worked various jobs in Creston, Iowa including Boyd’s Appliances, Coca-Cola Distributing, and then Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad (BNSF) for 30 years obtaining numerous positions such as foreman on the steel gang, timekeeper, and track foreman. Larry also attended Southwestern Community College. Some of the things Larry and his family enjoyed was fishing, picnics, camping, coon hunting, going to Des Moines for shopping, going out to eat, and drive-in movies.

After Larry and Judy divorced, some years later, Larry married Joyce (Kilgore) Wright. They married September 22, 2001. Larry retired from BNSF and enjoyed his time helping Joyce with projects at their home. He liked talking to, and joking with, their neighbors and railroad friends. Larry especially enjoyed communicating all over the world with his Ham radio buddies. Larry had a way with electronics since he was a kid, any kind of radio he could get his hands on, it was his favorite hobby but also tinkered with lawn mowers, car and truck motors, even race cars. So many have said that Larry was a jolly guy, always with a smile on his face.

The time had come for God to call on Larry to help him… He was in a car accident in Boise, Idaho and died at the scene on Friday, August 11, 2017. Larry went to be with his parents; infant sister; father-in-law; aunts, uncles, and cousins; grandparents; step-grandchildren Kadden and Cody; and other family and friends in heaven.
