OBITUARY ~ PAUL ROBERT WEIGEL
August 27, 1940 ~ March 17, 2017

Paul Robert Weigel, age 76, of Leon, Iowa, the son of Charles Vincent and Cora Elizabeth (Robinete) Weigel, was born August 27, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa. He left this life on Friday, March 17, 2017, while a patient at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Paul attended school in Ellston, Iowa. At the age of 15, he enjoyed hopping train boxcars and working out west. He once drove his Studebaker car out as far as the gas lasted, left it, came back from working, and put gas in it. It was untouched. He worked in Illinois on construction for many years and farmed. He loved the mules he owned over the years.

Paul was married several times and was blessed to be called Dad by six children and Grandpa by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was an avid hunter of elk, moose, deer, rabbit, squirrel, and coons all of his life all over the United States and Canada. He enjoyed fishing everywhere and hunting mushrooms. He was also passionate about figure eight racing, Cardinal ballgames, and Nascar. He saw as many in person as he did on TV. Bill Caldwell took him to see the Cardinals many times. Les Roesner and his sons enjoyed all their hunting trips, and Kenny Schelk and Darrell Elsberry gave him joy on fishing trips to Mark Twain Lake and many farm ponds. He enjoyed trapping and eating turtles.

After moving to Leon, Iowa, he met Bonnie Elsberry. They became good companions and spent the past 17 years together. He and her son-in-law, Jake Stone, farmed together for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed playing cards with his Ellston friends and Alphie Fulton. More recently, he enjoyed taking drives, visiting the welding shop with friends, and reminiscing about his elk hunts to Durango, Colorado through Wolf Creek Pass and all his adventures down the mountain. He often mentioned the late Danny Clark, his friend since childhood.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Carol; and brother, Charlie.

Survivors include his companion, Bonnie Elsberry of Leon, Iowa and her children, Darrell and Mary Elsberry, Deb and Brian Greene, Deanna and Jake Stone, and Denise and Dusty Buckingham; his children, Tami and Carl Smith, Paul Weigel, Jr., Kale Briner, Elaine and Joey Martin, Tyrel and Ashley Briner, and JoQuetta and Zeb Harker; brothers, Dick Weigel and Carol, Tom and Ruby Weigel, and Dan and Pam Weigel; sister, Kathy and Terry Baker; grandchildren and great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017, with Pastor Dale Short officiating. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
