October 09, 1936 ~ May 20, 2017Virginia Dolores Powell, 90, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Blockton, died May 20, 2017, at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
Virginia was born October 9, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York to Lloyd and Lillian Waldron. After graduation from high school, she worked in a military defense plant during World War II. Two of her favorite pastimes in Brooklyn were spending time at Ebbets Field watching the Brooklyn Dodgers and having fun times at Coney Island. It was at Coney Island she met her future husband, Hurley Powell, a handsome young man from Redding, Iowa. Hurley was stationed on a U.S. Navy destroyer ship which had docked in New York.
Virginia and Hurley were married November 29, 1944 in Brooklyn. After World War II ended, they lived in Brooklyn for two years until Hurley persuaded Virginia to relocate to rural Redding via their pickup loaded with all their belongings. It was there, and later rural Clearfield and finally rural Blockton, they worked together on their farm operation. To this union were born two children, Dennis Lloyd and Donna Judy.
Virginia was a very hard working farm wife, working right alongside her husband, overcoming many obstacles transitioning from a city girl to a farm wife. She could also accomplish anything she set her mind to. She was a very accomplished self-taught artist, seamstress, quilter and skilled in all types of handiwork. In addition, she started taking piano lessons at age 75. Virginia raised a large vegetable garden every year and raised chickens she dressed and sold. Her homemade noodles, cinnamon rolls, and fried chicken were always a special treat her family looked forward to. Virginia treasured time spent with her grandson, Clint. She was so proud to be a great grandma and loved their nursing home visits to show off the children to others.
Virginia was preceded in death by her father and mother; sister, Carolyn, and her husband, Hurley; sisters-in-law, Leona Bolinger, Lois Austin, Lela Brown, Alice Reimer and Ruth Cavender; and brothers-in-law, Dale Powell, Everett Bolinger, George Austin, Howard Brown, Gene Reimer and Pete Cavender.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Powell (special friend Susan Padilla) of Sterling, Illinois; daughter, Donna (Jim) Pedersen of Mount Ayr; grandson, Clint (Courtney) Bowen of Winterset; granddaughter, Jennifer Morrison, Midland, Texas; great grandchildren, Jayden Morrison, Colton Bowen, Tyler Bowen and Tinsley Bowen; sisters-in-law, Shirley Woollums and Pauline Crussell and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, May 23 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with Pastor Bill Armstrong officiating with a Eulogy by Jim Pedersen.
Casket Bearers were Clint Bowen, Jim Pedersen, Dennis Caldwell, Roy Brown, Gary Myers and Tom Carr. Honorary Pallbearers were Jayden Morrison, Colton Bowen, Tyler Bowen and Tinsley Bowen.
She is at rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr with memorials at Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
