OBITUARY ~ ELDON ELBERT STILL
July 10, 1936 ~ February 25, 2017

Eldon Elbert Still, 80, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr.

Eldon was born the 8th child of 10, on a farm north of Mount Ayr on July 10, 1936 to Mary Ellen Parker and Leonard L. Still. Eldon attended Caledonia country school; graduating 8th grade. Eldon then began his career as a farmer, helping on the family farm until he married Frances “Anne” Garrity on April 11, 1960 in Winterset.

He and Anne made their home on a farm south of Kellerton along with Anne’s brother Jack and sister Kathleen. Son Brad Eldon was born January 18, 1965 and daughter Beth Anne on March 20, 1967.

Eldon and Anne divorced in 1984 and Eldon married Janice “Jan” Stringham Simpson on August 2, 1986 at the Kellerton United Methodist Church. With this union, he gained two sons Randy and Tim.

Eldon was a lifelong farmer until the time he and Jan moved to town in 1994. He also spent many years driving the school bus 1960-1977, serving on the Grand Valley school board and Ringgold County Board of Supervisors.

In his “retirement” Eldon served on the Mount Ayr City Council many years and spent countless hours always helping Brad farm, checking cows, fixing fence, being the “go-fer” and raising a very large garden, canning for countless days on end and sharing with his family. He was always there for his children and grandchildren and a very proud father and grandfather. He enjoyed every minute of being with his family, laughing, and playing cards, cooking lots of food to be sure no one went hungry and making/eating popcorn. Eldon was the popcorn man – delivering popcorn around town frequently and especially to the Ringgold Hospital where Jan was an x-ray tech for many years.

After failing health, Eldon found his new home at Mount Ayr Health Care Center in September 2015; where the staff soon nicknamed him “Boss” and enjoyed his sincere appreciation, and sense of humor. Jan continued to be part of his daily life, and he looked forward to her visits. He enjoyed their outings to drive around the country side or sit at the kitchen table at “Jan’s house” as often as he could.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 30 years, Jan of Mount Ayr; son Brad (Christy) Still of Kellerton, daughter Beth (Mike) of Marion; step-son Randy (Athena) Simpson of Franklin, Tennessee; step-daughter-in-law, Chris Simpson of Corning; his four grandsons, one granddaughter, five step-grandsons and two step-granddaughters: Brandon Still and Brock (Makenzie) Still of Mount Ayr; Brian (Tessa) Still of Kellerton; Dalton (Rachel) Combs of Marion; Micaela Combs of Ames; Adam (Lauren) Simpson of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Jacob (Hilary Chittom) and Isaac of Franklin, Tennessee; Dustin Surrell of Jefferson City, Missouri and Brandi Simpson of Corning; Trevor Gooding, Mount Ayr; Macey Bowen, Kellerton; two great-granddaughters and one more expected in August 2017; two great step-granddaughters and two great step-grandson: Kambreigh and Aspen Still, Mount Ayr, IA and Baby-to-Be Combs, Marion; Grasye and Kailey and Brycen Surrell, Jefferson City, Missouri; Ridge Simpson of Spring Hill, Tennessee; sister Joyce Johnson, sister-in-law, Ethel Still, brother Ed (Glenda) of Mount Ayr, and many extended family and friends.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, step-son Tim Simpson, and step-granddaughter, Charlcey Bowen, three sisters and four brothers and their spouses: Emma Murphy, Ethel (Cliff) Doolittle, Leucena (Wilbur) Kobbe, Guy, Ray (Vesta), Lee and George: and brother-in-law Jim Johnson.
