OBITUARY ~ MARALYN ROSE (McMATH) SCHLAPIA
July 02, 1920 ~ December 03, 2016

Maralyn Rose Schlapia, daughter of Leland and Edna Hartman McMath was born July 2, 1920 near Clearfield, Iowa and passed away December 3, 2016 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Dale and Maralyn both passed away on the same date, December 3, nine years apart.

Maralyn had rheumatic fever when she was a junior in high school causing her to miss graduating with her high school class but graduated a year later in 1939. After graduation, she obtained her “Normal Training” certificate and taught country school for the next 3 ˝ years.

The love of her life, Floyd Dale Schlapia, returned home after serving five years in World War II, and they were married one month later on September 4, 1945 in Troy, Kansas and were blessed to celebrate 62 years of marriage. They settled one mile west of Mount Ayr in 1950 and lived there most of their life together.

Three children were born to this marriage: Jeannette, Roger, and Meredith. After the kids began school, Maralyn started working at Bud and Hazel Matthew’s ice cream shop, Burge’s Ben Franklin Dime Store, and then Iowa Southern Utilities for 18 years retiring in 1984. Maralyn was a member of the United Baptist Presbyterian Church serving her church faithfully, also neighborhood club, Ringgold Singers, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Group, Hospital Auxiliary and a sewing group at the neighborhood center. She always had a huge garden, canned a lot of food, sewed, knitted, crocheted, made clothes, embroidered, played cards with neighbors, raised Pekingese dogs, chickens, and milked cows. She also camped for several years around Lake Rathbun and helped Meredith with her daycare rocking several babies. Maralyn and Dale enjoyed taking long car rides, eating lunch in Allendale, MO, going to the Amish stores at Redding, and square dancing.

After Dale died Dec 3, 2007 Maralyn moved into an apartment next to Meredith and lived there for six years before moving to Mount Ayr Health Care Center and resided there for the next two years.

Maralyn is survived by daughter Jeannette (David) Scott, children Derek Scott and Deron (Liline) Scott; son Roger (Betty) Schlapia, children Amy (Brian) Jones, their children Brooklynn and Griffin, and Eric (Jennifer) Schlapia, their children Tanner and Sophie; daughter Meredith (Duane) Dredge children Leslie Dredge-Murphy (Jared), their children Rhett and Zachary, Clinton (Allison) Dredge, their children Colton and Adley, Adam (Katrina) Dredge, their children Adalynn and Tarynn, and Morgan Dredge (Erik Kalweit); brother Robert (Shirley) McMath; sisters-in-law Mary Lou Schlapia, and Kay Dotson; special friends Todd, (Angie) Glendenning, their children Hannah, and Blair; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Maralyn was preceded in death by her husband Dale; parents; sister and brother-in-law Lavon and Paul Brown; brother and sister-in-law Dwight and Helen McMath; brothers-in-law Russell Schlapia and Lee Dotson; sister-in-law Thelma Schlapia; sister and brothers-in-law Laveta and Walter Strange, Fay and Dale Mather. Her love and care will be remembered by all.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with Rev. Mike Maddy officiating. Carol Anne McCreary, Jodie Wurster, Grace Warin, Barbie Belzer and Nancy Sackett will provide the music.

Casket bearers will be Derek Scott, Deron Scott, Clinton Dredge, Adam Dredge, Eric Schlapia and Jared Murphy.

Honorary casket bearers will be Amy Jones, Tanner Schlapia, Sophie Schlapia, Morgan Dredge, Rhett Murphy, Zachary Murphy, Brooklynn Leming, Griffin Jones, Colton Dredge, Adley Dredge, Adalynn Dredge, Tarynn Dredge and Leslie Dredge-Murphy.

A memorial fund has been established to United Baptist Presbyterian Church. The final resting place is Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
