January 08, 1930 ~ December 22, 2016LaRetta LaVaun Novak, 86, of Creston passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston. Pastor Mel Kendall, Calvary Baptist Church, Ottumwa, Iowa will officiate. Open Visitation will be from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 28. Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Creston Meal Site. On-line condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.
LaRetta LaVaun Novak, the daughter of Walter Lee and Aldah LaVaun (Waggoner) Brown, was born January 8, 1930, in Beaconsfield, Iowa. LaRetta graduated from Beaconsfield High School on May 25, 1949. On February 14, 1950 she married George Matthias Novak at Bedford, Iowa. LaRetta lived most of her life in the Mount Ayr, Iowa area and moved to Creston in the early 1980s.
LaRetta was a homemaker and mother of six children. She worked as a team with her husband, George, growing and selling produce.
Left to cherish LaRetta’s memory is her husband of sixty-six years, George Matthias Novak, Creston; her children: Georgia LaVaun (Hillman) Walter, Wilbur, NE; Katherine Lee (Andrew) Thomas, Winter Garden, FL; James George (Felicia) Novak, Tingley, IA; Susan Ann (Joel) Stein, Eagle Grove, IA; Jerry Kay Novak and Fiance’ Tyann Simmons, Creston; and Jackie Cyril (Mamie) Novak, Creston; Eleven Grandchildren: Jessica Placek; Tristan Novak; Jamie Storhoff; Joy Stein Van Houten; Katie Barker; Lisa Wiblin; Christopher Novak; Amber Scharf; Mariah Gray; Toni Markowski; and Marcus Jones; and many Great-Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren; her brothers: Dwain Homer, Des Moines, IA; Randall Earl, Mount Ayr, IA; Arlan Kay (wife Linda), Indianola, IA; and Gale Nolan Brown, Neola, IA; her sisters: Sharon Sue (husband David) Robison, Des Moines, IA; and Rita Fae (husband Larry) Freihage, Ellston, IA; sisters-in-law: Leona Brown, Nevada, IA; and Kathy Brown, Wagner, SD; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding LaRetta in death were her parents; her brothers: Carroll Lee and Marvin Eugene Brown; her sister, Joy Ann Brown; her sister-in-law, JoAnne Brown; and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Laverne “Bus” and Mary Novak; and Robert “Bob” and Barbara Novak.
