OBITUARY ~ Emma Dora (Clayton) Bailey
1881 ~ June 09, 1941

A total of 3.08 inches of rain fall on Sunday and Monday overflowed rivers and creeks and resulted in the loss of one life in the county.

The tragic death of Mrs. Charles Bailey, of Diagonal, occurred Monday afternoon when the wagon in which she was riding overturned in the currents of the backwater of [the] Platte River four miles west of Diagonal. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Clayton and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stitesman and Mrs. Bailey had gone to the river to watch the rising water. When Mr. Clayton stated to drive the team across the waters, [the team] became frightened at a piece of driftwood and started to run. One of the horses slipped and fell pulling the other horse down and throwing the seven occupants into the water.

The horses and running gears of the wagon aught on the fence and the horses drowned there. The wagon box and body of Mrs. Bailey floated several feet down the river and lodged on some bushes. Searching parties didn't find Mrs. Bailey's body until about 11:30 that night.

Transcriber's Note: Emma Dora (Clayton) Bailey was born in 1881. She was interred at Clearfield Cemetery.
