OBITUARY ~ DOROTHY IRENE SOBOTKA
September 30, 1920 ~ December 22, 2015

Dorothy Irene Sobotka was born September 30, 1920 at the family home south of Diagonal to Otto and Albena (Jezek) Sobotka and passed away December 22, 2015 at the Mount Ayr Healthcare Center.

Dorothy attended school until sixth grade in Diagonal then went to Siloam Country School until eighth grade. Dorothy had many memories of those trips to and from school. Mud roads and traveling to and from with a horse and cart made travel difficult. Boy did she think they were uptown when brother Marv got his license, and they cruised to school in the family car. In 1941, she graduated from Benton Community School.

Dorothy is remembered by many as a life long caregiver of children.Throughout her life, Dorothy would live with families to help take care of the newborns and younger children. Dorothy also showed her love of children by being a proud supporter of the Diagonal Maroons and would walk to all the home games. Oh, how she enjoyed her maid-rite, Sprite and Milky Way candy bar. Later in life, Dorothy kept her sweet tooth but switched to Hershey’s and Mountain Dew.

Traveling to Texas and the Ozarks, playing cards with the neighbors, attending Benton alumni banquets, mowing the Bohemian Cemetery, and helping with household chores kept Dorothy busy, too.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Albena; brothers Robert and Carol; sisters-in-law Shirley and Margaret Sobotka; and niece Sharon Sobotka Overholser.

Left to mourn her passing are brother Marvin; sister-in-law Arlene; nephews and nieces Jim (Wanda) Sobotka of Glade Valley, North Carolina, Randy (Jan) Sobotka of Des Moines, Gary (Darla) Sobotka of Mount Ayr, Rex Sobotka, Pamela (Robert) Grace, Shelly (Alan) Bentley, Doug (Darla) Sobotka all of Diagonal; 17 great nephews and nieces along with many other friends and relatives.

Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements.

Services were held at the United Church of Diagonal on Sunday, December 26, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Edward Shields officiating. Casketbearers were Jeremy Grace, Steven Grace, Chris Sobotka, Bradley Bentley, Cody Sobotka and Michael Bentley. Honorary pallbearers were Rex Sobotka, Andrea Pauli, Megan VanZandt, Rachel Inloes, Matt Sobotka, Alex Sobotka, Katie Sobotka and Erin Sobotka.

Dorothy is at rest in the Bohemian Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Bohemian Cemetery.
