March 03, 1916 ~ February 14, 2014Nova Edna Giles, 97, of Mount Ayr, passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday February 16 at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Pastor Lowell Houts will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Tingley Cemetery. Open visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr.
Memorials may be directed to the Tingley Mealsite.
Nova Edna (Baker) Giles, daughter of Jasper LeRoy Baker and Bertha Grace (Miller) Baker was born March 3, 1916 in Clarke County, Iowa. Nova grew up in the Lucas area and was educated in the Osceola area schools.
She was married to Floyd Giles in Leon on December 31, 1935. Three children were born to this union; LeRoy, Darlene and Doris Jean. They settled and farmed in the Tingley area throughout the years. They raised a big garden that they share cropped with people in the area and raised chickens, rabbits and Toy Fox Terriers. Nova worked as a farmwife and also as a certified nurse's assistant for Sunny Slope and Mount Ayr Health Care. After Floyd died, January of 1977, she moved into Tingley until moving to the Mount Ayr Care Center on December 5, 2008.
Nova enjoyed going to the Tingley meal site to visit, play cards and bingo. She loved to spend time playing canasta and putting together jigsaw puzzles with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Through the years she went on many sightseeing trips after retirement.
Nova was preceded in death by; her parents; husband, Floyd; son, LeRoy Giles; brother, Arden Baker; two sisters, Opal Fletcher and Evadna Baker; one infant sibling.
She is survived by; two daughters, Darlene (Don) Bear of Mount Ayr and Doris Jean Dufty of Pueblo, Col.; three sisters, Leah Wallace, Gertrude Benedict and Irma Lee Newton; nine grandchildren, Kelly Kemmert, Scott Dufty, Jodi Angus, Jacque Davis, Dan Bear, Tim Giles, Tom Giles, Terry Giles and Ted Giles; many great-grandchildren and also great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services were conducted at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Sunday, February 16, 2014, with Pastor Lowell Houts officiating. Musical selections were "You Raise Me Up," "The Old Rugged cross" and "This Is Not GOod-bye."
Honorary pallbearers included Clara Beck, Agnes Sutherland, Margaret Hull, Pat Telpley, Donna Melvin and Kay Welling.
Interment was in the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley.
