Brown, Merle Eldon -
Merle Eldon Brown, son of Lee F. and Edna Perdue Brown, was born southeast of Diagonal. When he was one year old the family moved to a farm two miles west and one-fourth mile south of Diagonal. He graduated from Diagonal High School in 1932 and from Sweeney Aviation School in Kansas City, MO.

Merle married Miriam Wood of Clearfield on July 7, 1940 in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

He worked at Curtiss Wright Corporation in St. Louis, MO for five years before they moved to Iowa. He came to Union County in 1946 where he farmed until retiring in 1980.

Merle passed away on June 22, 1999 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, IA at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 19 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Olen Brown, a sister Gladys Graham and an infant grandson, Drew Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam of Kent; a son Wynnewood Brown and his wife, Elaine also of Kent; four grandchildren Rhonda Oliphant and her husband J.R. of Elk Horn, IA; Dawn Plowman and her husband Cale of Dubuque, IA; Vincent Brown of Kent, IA and Evelyn Brown of Cedar Falls, IA; two great grandchildren Kristen and Logan Oliphant, as well as a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, IA on Friday, June 25, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.
Music was provided by Patty Parrish, Mary Webb and Margaret Bickers.

Casket bearers were Bob Graham, Dick Graham, Paul Van Gelder, Joe Klech, Jr., Marion Hansell, and Phillip Hudson. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Taylor, Don Johnston, Jim Kearney, Allen Lillie, Joe Johnston, and Dick Van Gelder.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery.
Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
