Davenport, Margaretha Lenore Schultz -
Margarctha Lenore Schultz Davenport was born March 24, 1890 to John and Kathesena Schultz near Glen Ullin, North Dakota. She died May 30 in the Clearview Nursing Home in Mt.Ayr at the age of ninety years, two months and six days.
Her parents immigrated to America from Germany and pioneered land in North Dakota. She walked several miles to attend rural school and later was a student at North Dakota State Home Economics College. At the age of twenty-one, Margaret homesteaded one hundred sixty acres near Glen Ullin and walked or rode a horse into town to work at her dress shop.
She was united in marriage with John Stewart Davenport on February 20, 1917 in Elgin, North Dakota. They spent one year in Missouri before moving to their farm northwest of Diagonal in 1921. She continued to live there until recently when she became a resident of Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, and writing poetry. She pieced and made many quilts, some of which earned her blue ribbons at various fairs. Margaret was a member of the Congregational Church in Glenn Ullin and also of neighborhood clubs near her home at Diagonal.
She is survived by her four sons and their wives; John and Marjorie of Creston; Marshall and Lois of Waterloo, Ia.,Donald and Lee of Edmonds, Washington; and Russell and Floy of Diagonal; sixteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren,
three step-great granddaughters, one brother, Enoch Schultz of Bismarck. North Dakota, a sister, Lydia Mills of Pasadena, California and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1948, her parents, five brothers, one sister, and one grandson, Noel Davenport.
Services were held in the Platte Center Church on June 2 with Reverend Roger Graf officiating. Leslie Ide was the organist with Darl Bell as soloist.
Casketbearers were LeRoy Francis, Paul Vanderpluym, Marvin Wyer, Mike Austin, Eddie Austin, and Roy Davenport.
Interment was in the Rising Sun Cemetery northwest of Diagonal.
