OBITUARY ~ CLYDE SPICER

Arthur Clyde, son of Martha ELLIS and James H. SPICER, was born September 24, 1886, in the Benton community of Ringgold county, Iowa and lived all of his long life within the county. He passed away January 5, 1978 in the Ringgold county hospital, Mount Ayr, Iowa, three months past his 91st birthday.

He was united in marriage with Grace JONES on Christmas Day, 1910, engaging in farming until their retirement to Diagonal. Their home was one where friends, neighbors and relatives, especially nieces and nephews, were welcomed.

Following the death of his wife October 22, 1960 (just two months prior to their golden wedding anniversary) he continued in his own home for a period of 16 years when he became a resident of Clearview Home, Clearfield, Iowa.

In retirement he kept busy, mowing lawns, working at cemeteries, caring for many beautiful houseplants, as well as tulips and roses in his lawn.

He was the last of his family, having been preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Carrie and Elphia; his brothers, Alva and Guy, and William, who died in infancy.

He lived unselfishly with due regard for his fellow-traverlers, never losing interest in the friends he made through the long journey of his life.

I'd like to be a friend of those I meet from day to day;
I'd like to help them all I can along life's rugged way.
I'd like to do the little things that oft are left undone;
And give the little help by which great victories are won.
I'd like to say the little words, that folks so like to hear;
I'd like to clasp their hand and smile, their lonesome hearts to cheer.
And when I sing my final song, if deeds I've done unkind,
I'd like to take them all along, leave naught by good behind.
- (Richardson)
