John A. Blauer

HINZ, FITZGERALD, CROZIER, BAKER, BACON, MCDANIELS

John A. Blauer, 65, of La Vista, Nebraska, formerly of Decorah, died Monday, August 15, 2011. John died in his son's home in Kenyon, Minnesota surround by loved ones. A gathering to celebrate John's life is Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 3-8 PM at the Stone Hearth Inn in Decorah, Iowa. John fought a courageous 16 month battle with cancer; and to help others learn and fight cancer, John donated his body to science. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

He was born March 5, 1946, (to Darold and Rosemary Baker Blauer) in Tingley, Iowa. John graduated from Onamia Minnesota High School in 1964 and received a BA in history from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1968. He married his college sweetheart, Cindy Hinz, December 28, 1968. They lived together in Decorah before relocating to La Vista, Nebraska in 2005.

John worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Nebraska until his death. He previously managed the Decorah Lumber Yard from 1969-1986 and owned Discount Liquor of Decorah from 1989-2005. While residing in Decorah, he was treasurer and president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Elks Club and Silver Crest Country Club.

He was a man who lived to work. When not working, John loved to fish, play cards and spend time with family and friends.

(John was prececeased by his parents Darold and Rosemary Baker Blauer, Grandparents Lyman Baker, Ethel McDaniels Baker, his step grandmother Helen Bacon Baker, John and Dolly Blauer, and many aunts and uncles.)

John is survived by his wife, Cindy, of 42 1/2 years and his children, Richard (Jessica), of Kenyon, Minnesota; Jory (Mea) of Chicago, Illinois; Stephanie (Chris) Fitzgerald of Vero Beach, Florida; Galen (Shannon) Crozier of Holmestead. He is also survied by eight grandchildren, brother Larry (Sherry) Blauer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and mother in law Barbara Hinz of Iowa City.
