OBITUARY ~ MRS. ETHEL R. (ABARR) HOFFMAN
Mrs. Ethel R. (ABARR) HOFFMAN was born July 18, 1881, near Redding, Iowa, and passed away January 17, 1958, at Lakewood, Colo., where she had resided since 1947. Her death was due to cancer.
On February 20, 1901, she was united in marriage with Silas E. HOFFMAN.
In 1920, the family moved from Delphos to a stock ranch eighteen miles south of Yuma, Colo., where a few years later they opened a general merchandise store, which seved the community for several years. The little town became knows as "ABARR," which took its name from Mrs. HOFFMAN'S maiden name. Mrs. HOFFMAN also operated the post office for more than twenty-five years.
Mrs. HOFFMAN was an active church worker wherever she lived and prior to her death was a member of the Lakewood Methodist church. She was president of the W.C.T.U. in her area until ill health forced her to give up that work in which she was intensely interested.
One son, Kenneth E., passed away in childhood and was buried in Middle Fork cemetery in Ringgold county.
She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Consuelo CHILCOTE, of Woodlake, Calif., Mrs. Eleanor EUBANKS, of Arvada, Colo., and Mrs. Beulah CROUCH, of Custer, Mon.; three sons, Lynn A., of Fayette, Mo., Tennis W., of Okinawa, and Myron P., of North Charleston, S. C.; fifteen grandchildren; on great-grandchild; three brothers, Joseph E. ABARR, of Billings, Mont., Carl E. ABARR, of Hardin, Mont., and Merle ABARR, of New Brunswick, Canada; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Van WAGENEN, of Billings, Mont., Mrs. Winifred HOLLAND, of Laurel, Mont., Mrs. Jessie FRINK, of Plaza, N. D., and Mrs. Gussie GROVE, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and an aunt, Mrs. Rachel MILLER, of Diagonal.
All of Mrs. HOFFMAN'S children were present for the funeral rites. Others from outside of Denver in attendance were Mrs. Tennis HOFFMAN and daughter, of Okinawa; Mr. and Mrs. Howard HOFFMAN of Bedford; Olin HOFFMAN of Mount Ayr, and Mrs. Sam RUSH and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight RUSH, of Greeley, Colorado.
Among the casketbearers were two grandsons, Robert EUBANKS, of Arvada, Colo., and Lawrence HOFFMAN, of Boulder, Colo. Interment was in Crown Hill cemetery at Denver.
