Vaughn, William Henry -
William Henry Vaughn was born in Benton, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, January 6, 1849; and died at Tuttle, Oklahoma, Jan. 7, 1920. He was married to Susan Matthews, daughter of Rev. Matthews D. D. of Monmouth, Illinois, who died a few years later at their home in Atlantic, Iowa, leaving three children Robert, Ruth and Mary.

In 1885, Mr. Vaughn came to Clearfield and engaged in the hardware business with his cousin, O. S. Carson, in which business he continued for a number of years. In later years he conducted the Fair Store. The older citizens knew Mr. Vaughn and all speak well of him.

March 18,1886, he was married to Nellie Tyler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Tyler, then of Clearfield. To this union three daughters were born, Jean, Madge and Maurine. He resided here until 1912 when with his family, he moved to Des Moines, which has since been their home.

At the time of his death he was with his daughter, Mrs. Ruth Clark,at Tuttle, Oklahoma. He retired on the eve of his death feeling unusually well. When he did not arise at the usual hour, his daughter went to call him and receiving no response found that the last summons had come, though he was apparently sleeping peacefully.

He was a devoted Christian practically all his life and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Clearfield. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Clark of Tuttle, Okla.; Mrs. Paul S. West of Hercules, Calif.; Mrs. Leonard R. Manley of Sioux City, Iowa and Miss Maurine Vaughn of Des Moines. Robert and Mary preceded their father in death.

The funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday January 10th at the United Presbyterian Church of Clearfield and interment followed in the Clearfield Cemetery; his remain were laid beside that of his father and of his beloved son Robert. Rev. Nathan Weingart of Carlisle, Iowa, former pastor of their church, conducted the services.

Mrs. Vaughn, who for the past two months has been in California, was unable to be present, because of ill health.
