OBITUARY ~ ROBERT JOHN TAYLOR

Robert John TAYLOR, age 69 of Grand River, Iowa, the son of Wellington Arthial and Cloris Vivian (COOPER) TAYLOR, was born March 31, 1942 at Osceola, Iowa. He died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, April 25, 2011.

Robert graduated from Grand River high school in 1960, a member of the last graduating class before it closed. He started working construction and then on October 17, 1961 he entered the United States Navy. Robert was one of the hand-picked crew members to serve on the May 25, 1963 commissioned USS Gridley. Following his transfer to the reserves on February 17, 1966, Robert started working for various companies including Maytag in Newton, before moving to southern Iowa and working at Sargent Quarry, Decatur county, driving a rock truck and a snow plow, farming at Grand River, Jimmy Dean in Osceola, driving truck, WoodLink in Mount Ayr, the Decatur County Hospital and Iowa Select in Murray.

He retired on December 31, 2004. In 1989 he started mowing yards in Grand River and was very proud of his work.

On May 28, 1971, he married Lana Sue NICHOLS in the Methodist church in Grand River, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons, Nathan and Adam.

Robert was a member of the Charles Ladd American Legion Post 215 and the United Methodist Church in Grand River. Robert enjoyed traveling to visit friends and relatives and watching the drag races at Bethany, Missouri.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Lana, on March 1, 2007, and father-in-law, Glen NICHOLS.

Survivors include his sons, Nate TAYLOR and fiancè Toni FREIHAGE and her son, Andy, and Adam TAYLOR, all of Grand River, Iowa; brother, Randall and Karen TAYLOR of Des Moines, Iowa; sister, Marla and Don HENDRIX of Leon, Iowa; mother-in-law, Helen NICHOLS of Grand River, Iowa; brother-in-law, Kelly and Pam NICHOLS of Van Wert, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Linda and Barry BURTON of Hatfield, Missouri, LeAnn and Terry BOLES of Grand River, Iowa and Jerri STEWART of Ellston, Iowa; nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa on Friday, April 29, 2011, with Pastor Rick HAWKINS officiating. Burial was in the Grand River Cemetery in Grand River.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
