OBITUARY ~ WILLIAM SHERMAN STAHL

Wiliam Sherman STAHL was one of a family of ten children of Michael and Mary TALLEY STAHL, pioneer residents of Ringgold county, Iowa, where they located on the farm still owned in the family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edgar STAHL, who died in infancy, and Grant STAHL, and by five sisters, Sadie STAHL, Luella STAHL, Mrs. George E. SHAFER, Mrs. Randolph S. BEALL and Josephine STAHL. Two sisters, Mrs. Charles M. KING and Miss Eva STHAL, both of Mount Ayr, Iowa, survive him and were present at his funeral, although unable to reach Chicago in time to see their brother alive.

At the funeral, which was held October 5, his pastor, Dr. John W. R. SUMWALT, read the obituary and paid a brief tribute, after which interment was made in the family lot in the beautiful Woodlawn cemetery.

William Sherman STAHL was born at Diagonal, Iowa, January 16, 1868, and passed away October 2, 1937, at St. Luke's hospital. He was raised on a farm at Diagonal, Iowa, and was graduated from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, in 1893, and from the Iowa City law school in 1895. He practiced in St. Louis, Mo., and came to Chicago about 1897.

He was married to Miss Cora GOSNEY, a teacher in the public schools at Omaha, Neb., in December [31], 1899. His home has been at 6423 Greenwood for 36 years. He was interested in republican politics and was assistant corporation counsel under Mayor BUSSEE four years and U.S. district attorney four years.

Mr. STAHL was a member of the Woodlawn Methodist church, a member of Woodlawn Commandery, a charter member and past master of Damascus Lodge 888, A.F. & A.M., a member of Jackson Park Chapter 222, Past Worthy Patron of Woodlawn Chapter 355, O.E.S. He belonged to Delta Tau Delta college fraternity and also was past nobel grand in Woodlawn Lodge I.O.O.F., which is now Colfax lodge.

During the colored riot he served in the U.S. National Guards.

He leaves his wife, Cora G. STAHL, and two sisters, Mrs. C. M. KING of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and Miss Eva STAHL of Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa.

He served the Woodlawn community by taking active part in its civis interests and welfare. It may truly be said of him in the poet's words: "Write me as one who loved his fellowmen," and lo! his name led all the rest.

After reading the record prepared by Mrs. STAHL:

So his family saw him. Others of us saw him from other angles. His life was an open book. Living here in Woodlawn for 36 years he was well known to all the members of the community.

He was a civic worker. Not only was this true in the public offices which he held, but as a private citizen he took a full part in civic matters. Especially was this true in prohibition matters, for he was always a worker for that cause.

In the church he was one of our oldest members in point of service, long associated with its life and work.

His chief care, especially in these later years, was for his home and for the comrade of his years in these days of her retirement. It was his pleasure to be with her and care for her. Such he was as we knew him.
