OBITUARY ~ DON ELLIS JOHNSTON

Don Ellis JOHNSTON was born on December 4, 1926, at Ellston, Iowa. Don was the eldest of three children born to Vaughn and Mildred SHIELDS JOHNSTON.

In 1928, Don moved with his parents to a farm near Beaconsfield, Iowa. He graduated from Beaconsfield high school in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and spent time in Japan.

On May 31, 1947, he married Naomi Arlene McALEXANDER. They made their home on a farm one-fourth mile north of Don's parents. Don and Naomi moved to Portland, Oregon. They spent two years there before moving back to the farm in Iowa. They moved to the farm one and one-fourth miles from their original home where they spent the next 50 years. Don and Naomi spent many happy hours at Sun Valley Lake.

They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May of 2007. Naomi passed away on June 26, 2008. Don spent one and one-fourth years on the farm before moving to the Mount Ayr Health Care Center. Don passed away April 5, 2011.

He is survived by his brother, Gene (Nancy) JOHNSTON of Herman, Missouri and sister, Betty Lu OXENREIDER of Creston, Iowa; their families, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to the Beaconsfield Methodist Church.

Services were conducted at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Friday, April 8, 2011, with Rev. Eydie STEPHENS officiating. Pianist was Nancy SACKETT.

Casket bearers included Kevin CREVELING, Rex WALTERS, Duane POORE, Raymond WHITSON, Hugh WHITSON and Clint ANDERSON.

Honorary pallbearer was Keith WHITSON.

Military rites were by Emmett Liles Post 541 and Iowa Honor Guard Unit.

Don was laid to rest in the Ellston Cemetery in Ellston.
