August 25, 2010OBITUARY - ALICE SOPHIA (KLIMEK) MECKO
January 8, 1940- August 18, 2010Alice Sophia KLIMEK was born January 8, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, the second child of John and Maria (KOZINSKI) KLIMEK. She attended Saint Fidelis Catholic grade school and graduated in 1958 from Holy Family Academy in Chicago. She married George J. MECKO on December 30, 1961 at Saint Fidelis Catholic Church in Chicago. They had three children, Veronica, Catherine and Mark.
Alice and George lived in Seville, Spain and Columbus, Ohio before making their home in Franklin Park, Illinois where they raised their family and where Alice worked for Ekco Housewares. She attended Triton College in River Grove, Illinois and played on the college's women's tennis team and graduated with an associate degree in floral design in 1987.
Alice and George moved to Saugatuck, Michigan in 1988 and lived there 10 years. Alice and George managed apartments at Harbor View and Alice also worked as a floral designer. She was a member of the Saugatuck Garden Club and was a volunteer at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Alice moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa in 2000 where she lived for five years and where she sang with the Ringgold Singers. In 2005 she moved to Sun City Center, Florida and then spent the last three years of her life living near her family in Indiana and Iowa.
She loved cooking, gardening, hummingbirds, nature walking and opera. Alice died on August 18, 2010 at Greater Community Hospice Home in Creston, Iowa.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1999.
She is survived by daughters Veronica MECKO of Afton, Iowa and Catherine MECKO (Margaret PHILBIN and son Christopher and granddaughter Auroara) of Hammond, Indiana; son Mark MECKO (Diane RIVARD) of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandson Wendell RAY of Maloy, Iowa; brother Stanley KLIMEK of Tlaquepaque, Mexico; sisters Christine GOLIK (Ron) of Sun City Center, Florida and Mary BLACKBURN (Marsh) of Chicago, Illinois; sister-in-law Carol MECKO of Little Falls, Minnesota; brother-in-law Mike MECKO (Carolyn) and children of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and nieces, a nephew, extended family and a plethora of friends.
A memorial service will be on August 28, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at White Eagle in Niles, Illinois. Alice will also be remembered at a mass at Saint Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton on August 31 at 8:30 a.m.
Memorials may be designated for Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids or Greater Regional Hospice Home, Creston.
Powers Funeral Home of Creston and Afton is assisting with the arrangements.
