Charley WALTERS, 84, of New London, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in City.
Born May 30, 1921, in Ellston, he was the son of Bunker M. and (WATTS) WALTERS. On February 21, 1942, he married Elaine HOSFORD in Newton.
Mr. WALTERS was a rural mail carrier in the Burlington and Danville area, retiring in 1976. He also farmed in the Geode area.
He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he served as an X–ray technician on a hospital ship in the South Pacific. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, golfing, dancing, bridge and was a great reader. He served on the Danville School Board and was a member of Deerwood Golf Club. For 28 years he wintered in Mesa, Ariz.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Terry SMALL of Bloomington, Ill., and Kathy NELLOR of Mount Pleasant; one niece whom they raised, Peg SIEGRIED of St. Louis; one nephew whom they raised, Bunker FRENCH, three grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; one sister, Jaye COLEMAN of Yreka, Calif.; and one brother, Don WALTERS of Mediapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew whom they raised.
Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel in New London. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.
The celebration of life for Mr. WALTERS will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel, with Jeff WALTERS as celebrant. Burial will be at a later date.
A memorial has been established for cancer research.
