AUTO ACCIDENT FATAL TO TWO

Mother and Daughter Killed
in Accident near Osceola
Sunday Morning.

The cloud of deep mourning has rested over the community since Sunday morning when the word came from Osceola that Mrs. W. J. ELICK and her daughter Julia had been killed in an automobile accident on highway No. 65 [69?] five miles north of Osceola. The death message was received by Judge Homer A. FULLER and he in company with Howard TEDFORD left at once for Osceola to lend whatever assistance was possible.

As a result of the accident Mrs. ELICK was killed instantly and the daughter died a short time after being removed to the hospital in Osceola. The cause of the accident will probably never be know. Mr. and Mrs. ELICK, accompanied by their daughter, were en route to Brooklyn, Iowa, for a few days' visit at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Henry FRUS. At a point five miles north of Osceola, in rounding a curve, the automobile, which was driven by Mr. ELICK, became unmanageable, swerved in the road and overturned on the paving directly in the path of an automobile which was driven by Ray NELSON of Des Moines. It is assumed that some defect in the mechanical adjustment of the automobile was responsible for the accident. The ELICK car was completely wrecked, the top being crush. Mr. ELICK suffered only slight physical injuries as did also the driver of the other car and his companion.

No more distressing accident has ever happened in which Ringgold county residents were participants and no accident has ever brought more profound sorrow to the community.

The bodies were brought to Mount Ayr Sunday evening and were taken to the Rhoades Funeral Home where they were preapred for burial. They were then removed to the home in south Mount Ayr. Double funeral services, conducted by T. S. RHOADES, assisted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, were held at the home yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:30, and interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery. The bodies lay in state at the home from 9 a.m. until one o'clock p.m. and friends in large numbers called to pay tribute of respect and to share with the grief-stricken family in their burden of grief.

Mary Madgeline KLUBER, daughter of John and Francis KLUBER, was born near Prague, Bohemia, July 14, 1866, and died May 3, 1931, at the age of 64 years, nine months and 19 days.

In her infancy her family came to America, settling in and near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. At the age of 23 she married Wesley J. ELICK at Guernesy, Iowa, where they lived until 1914 when they moved to Ringgold county. To them were born seven children, Joseph, who died in infancy; Lewis, who died in France in 1918 [World War I]; Julia, who died with her mother, Mrs. Mary Smith of Smithland, Iowa; Helen of Mount Ayr; Mrs. Katherine FRUS of Brooklyn, Iowa; and Charles of Des Moines.

Her husband survives her together with two grandchildren, Helen and Betty FRUS. Her surviving brothers and sisters are John KLUBER of Cedar Rapids, Frank KLUBER of Guernsey, J. J. KLUBER of Creston, Mrs. Anna HIBECK of Camp Crook, S.D., Mrs. Nellie MERRILL of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Kate CHERMACK of Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. Emma NELSON of Hayward, Wis.

Mother ELICK was known for her unusual and tender devotion to her family, especially to her daughter Julia, who is inseparably joined with her mother even in death. She was an ideal wife, mother and neighbor, alway thoughtful of others, always cheeful, accepting the burdens of life without complaint.

Julia Adaline, youngest daughter of Wesley J. and Mary ELICK, was born July 4, 1906 at Guernsey, Iowa. There she spent her early childhood and at the age of eight came with her family to Ringgold county into the Rice Center community, where she attended the Rice Center and Silver Point Schools.

In 1919 her family moved to Mount Ayr. At about this time her health began to fail and for some years she has been an invalid.

Though confined to her home, she has always had aremarkable active interest in her home, her friends and in community events.

Julia's patience, her strength of spirit, her ready wit and unusualy keeness of intellect made pleasant to her her later inactive years and were a source of admiration and comfort to her family and friends.

She died May 3rd, 1931, at the age of 24 years, nine months and 29 days.

NOTE: Julia and Mary ELICK were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Wesley James ELICK was botn 1863 and died 1950 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr. Lewis J. ELICK was born August 16, 1892, and died October 7, 1918 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery.
