OBITUARY - DR. CHARLES DOWNIE

Well-known and Highly Esteemed Veterinarian

Dr. Charles DOWNIE, well known and highly esteemed veterinarian of North Judson, Indiana and vicinity, passed away at the Holy Family Hospital, LaPorte, Indiana, at 10:00 p.m. Friday, August 3, 1934.

"Doc" as he was known to all, was taken to the hospital on Monday, July 30 for observation and treatment after a lingering illness.

Three years ago, Dr. DOWNIE moved to Knox, Indiana, and had just recently moved to LaPorte.

Charles DOWNIE was born on October 10, 1868 at Secor, Woodford County, Illinois, the son of Alexander and Catharine (PARKS) DOWNIE, immigrants to Illinois from Scotland in the mid 1850's. He died at LaPorte, Indiana on August 3, 1934 at the age of 65 years, 9 months, and 23 days.

Survivors include his wife, Arbie (NICHOLS) DOWNIE, whom he married on August 21, 1929; eleven children by former marriages, Mrs. Eva (DOWNIE) CANFIELD and James DOWNIE of Villa Grove, Ill; Ivan of Montana; Kenneth of Kansas, Mrs. Genevieve (DOWNIE) NEWTON of Arkansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Edith (DOWNIE) MUTH of Berwyn, Illinois; Howard DOWNIE of Knox, Indiana, and Charles, Mildred, Robert & Ruby DOWNIE, all of North Judson; one sister, Elizabeth (DOWNIE) GILMORE (Mrs. James O. GILMORE) of North Judson; one brother, Everal Sumner DOWNIE of Mount Ayr, Iowa; eight grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends. One son, Ovid DOWNIE, preceded his father in death on July 4, 1922.

Remains were brought to North Judson, where friends paid their last respects at the Eatinger Chapel. Rev. W. L. HARGRAVE conducted the funeral service at Round Lake Church Monday, August 6. Burial was at Round Lake Cemetery.

Out of town guests who attended the services included Mr. and Mrs. Harrison HOLMAN, Mrs. Ruth GRUEN and daughter, Ilene; Mr. and Mrs. Carl NICHOLS and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn NICHOLS, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Willard NICHOLS and the widow's father, Harvey NICHOLS of LaPorte; Mrs. Bertha BRINKER, Marion, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer LANTZ; Mrs. Jennie WOOD and Arthur GEDDES of Milford, Ill; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil LANTZ and children of Wanatah; Mr. and Mrs. J. CANFIELD, Mr. and Mrs. A. BUSH and Mrs. Bert PARRISH, of Villa Grove, Ill; Mrs. Mabel HARMESON and Mrs. Fern BONFOY of Niles, Michigan; Mrs. Edith MUTH and sons Wayne and Albert of Berwyn, and Mr. and Mrs. F. GILMORE and children of San Pierre.
