OBITUARY - Mrs. HARRIET E. (LESAN) CLARK

Mrs. Harriet E. CLARK was born in Sebec, Maine, November 26, 1838, and died in Mount Ayr, Iowa, April 10, 1926. She was the daughter of Charles I. and Methitable LESAN, she being the fith child of the family of ten children, all whom have passed on, with the exception of one aged sister, Mrs. Mary M. LESAN, of Mount Ayr. She also leaves four sisters-in-law as follows: Mrs. Emma LESAN of Mount Ayr, Mrs. Mary LESAN of Neosho, Mo., Mrs. Ezra CLARK of Erie, Kansas, and Miss Rachel CLARK of Mount Ayr, and several nieces and nephews. The family moved from Maine to Stark county, Illinois, in May, 1852, following the death of the wife and mother. After the marriage of her three older sisters, Hariet (sic) was the home maker for her father and small brothers until her marriage to William CLARK March 15, 1861, in Stark county, Illinois, where they resided until their removal to Ringgold county, Iowa. Mrs. CLARK's husband died in Mount Ayr March 4, 1916. No children were born to this union but Cora WOODRUFF, now Mrs. Cora MIDDLETON, of Mount Ayr, Poe township, was adopted when three years of age. Waldo ALEXANDER, of Mount Ayr, at the death of his mother, was taken into the CLARK home at the age of six weeks and cared for until manhood. The children of the adopted daughter are as follows: Ray MIDDLETON, Mrs. Carrol MERRITT, Charlie and Joe MIDDLETON, all residing in Ringgold county. The past few years the deceased had resided with her sister-in-law, Miss Rachel CLARK, in Mount Ayr. Mrs. CLARK was a consistent member of the Methodist church for many years and her life was filled with good deeds. A host of friends hold her in loving rememberance.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jay KIRKENDALL. Interment was made beside her husband in Rose Hill cemetery [at Mount Ayr].

The relatives wish to express their appreciation and thank all who assisted during the illness and on the occasion of the death of Mrs. CLARK.
