Pioneer Cemetery group completed restoration work

This year the Ringgold Pioneer Cemetery Commission has completed restoration work on several cemeteries.

These include the Thompson Cemetery in Poe township, the Patrick Cemetery in Riley township, the Lewis Cemetery in Ahtens township, the Sweet Home Cemetery at Leasonville in Liberty township and the Oakland Cemetery in Poe township.

Volunteers that contributed to the success were Roger SCHNOOR, who rebuilt a cattle panel fence around Oakland Cemetery; Bill HYNEK, who reset the large stones in Patrick Cemetery and planted trees and graded a new driveway for Bever-Grimes Cemetery; and Ted BEAR, who installed a cement bench in the Bear Cemetery.

Commission members also contributing wre Bob MARTIN, Angie HYNEK, Patti BARNES, Rick WILEY and Dick SNETHEN. Wayne KEMERY serves as the representative from the Ringgold county board of supervisors.

It was reported by Liz LYNCH that the Alloway Cemetery no longer exists because the family moved the few ALLOWAY stones to the Platt (sic, Platte River) Cemetery many years ago. Alloway Cemetery was near the present [2002] site of the Iowa Select building near Maloy.

The commission is presently [2002] working on restoration of the Quinn Cemetery and the Tedrow Cemetery.

The commission is always interested to learn about the pioneer cemeteries and welcomes volunteers.

For more information, contact Angie HYNEK at 783-2610.
