Shields has championship Figure 8 racing season

A Ringgold county driver claimed the open division crown for the 2008 season in the GP Figure 8 national championship series of figure 8 racing and another local driver placed fourth.

Brett SHIELDS of Mount Ayr claimed the open division title with eight race wins and 19 top five finishes during the season while Justin FROST of Mount Ayr placed fourth.

Along with claiming the national championship, SHIELDS also won the Indianola and Adel track championships along with the 50-lap fall nationals held in Barnes City.

Also in the open class, Justin FROST of Mount Ayr brought home a fourth place finish for the year. He had three wins and 15 top five finishes for the year.

In figure 8 racing, drivers drive around a track shped like an eight and have to try to avoid collusions as the cars flash through the center of the track.

Iowa has the largest dirt figure 8 racing series in the nation with almost 300 drivers competing in three classes. Races held at Indianola, Adel, Barnes City and Fort Dodge earn points for the racers over the course of the year.

Joseph PARMER of Humeston won the stock crown and Wade KING of Pleasantville won the four wheel drive class.
