Old Skelly station restored on Mount Ayr square

The Mount Ayr square has a new look with a project to bring the former Skelly station on the square back to its old glory, even if it isn't a service station anymore. The stateion on the square closed in the 1980's and had become somewhat of an eyesore before Joe MURPHY began a project to restore it. This week the station took on more of its former glory when gas pumps were put in place out front and a Skelly advertising sign was constructed to one side -- just like it was years ago. As a reminder that gasoline was not always in the $4 a gallon range, the pumps are set at 49.9 cents per gallon, although no gasoline will be dispensed.

There are still several finishing touches before the station restoration will be complete, with these planned for the next few weeks. No final use for the refurbished building has been set, but MURPHY said that some vintage cars might be displayed in it for the time being. The lot between the Mount Ayr Record-News and Aunt Jennie's Attic has been purchased, with plans for a building there to be announced in the future -- another piece of rejuvenating the entire Mount Ayr square. Efforts are also being made to paint some more of the buildings around the square area to continue the beautification efforts.
