1,100 cranes in 9/11 commemoration

been working on a project in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks on the 10th anniversary of the deaths of more than 3,000 people that day. Over 1,100 origami cranes were folded and hung in the lobby of the elementary building.

Why the cranes?

The cranes are a project that came out of some conversations this summer with Crystal STORHOFF and Sherri NORRIS about the anniversary. Sherri NORRIS had been to New York City this past summer and had a lot of information to share about the 9/11 Memorial Site. She noted that in New York they don't use the term Ground Zero. They are focused on rebuilding and revitalizing efforts, not dwelling on the horrors of that day.

Combining that information with the story of Sadako and the 1,000 cranes and the project was born.

The cranes were made by the Talented and Gifted classes, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade art students, Joan MOORE and Crystal STORHOFF (with custodians Clint POORE and Josh HANAWALT providing ladder assistance).

The over 1,100 cranes are hanging in the entryway, along with artwork by the junior kindergarten through third grade students.

The public is invited to come to the school and see the display.
