Badger School

Some History of Rural schools
of Many Years Ago

In writing about the school in the Badger district I will go back to the time the school house was situated near the present [1931] home of George W. ADAIR and was taught by Isaac DILLEN, the father of the Mr. DILLEN who was formerly the editor of the Grant City Star. My father and mother both went to school to him, my father staying at the home of Samuel BAIRD Sr. near where the home of S. P. BAIRD is at this time.

The next place of having school in this district was when the school house was on the hill east of the Ida NORRIS home on what is now the farm of Chas. COMBS. I remember of Geo. W. NORRIS teaching school at this place, also remember of being to a spelling school there when I was a small boy and the word that they all missed was (Hallelujah) spelled three ways in the old spelling book -- Hallelujah, Halleluiah, and Halleluyah. I did not make an effort to spell the word but sat down. I think that George W. NORRIS was about the last teacher that taughter there, and the new school house was built at the corner one half mile east of the L. D. NORRIS corner, this must have been about 1878 or 79. This school house burned down and a new house built about one fourth mile south of the old school house and was called Orchard Hill.

Some of the teachers I can remember are Geo. W. NORRIS, Sophie H. MILLER, Valeria MILLER, Etta MILLER, Dr. B. H. MILLER, Addie MILLER, Katie MILLER, Sadie MILLER, Silas HOFFMAN, John N. HOFFMAN, Nan ARNETT, J. T. ROTHWELL, Jas. NORRIS, Rosa HILLHOUSE, J. L. PARKER, Lizzie PARKER, A. F. PARKER, Sarah PARKER, Mr. POTTER, Laura ANDREWS, R. F. This list is not in rotation, but as the names came to my mind, and no doubt I have left some out, but not intentionly.
