Mount Ayr Community elementary school sixth grader won the Creston hoop shoot and lost in a tie breaker in the district shoot in Red Oak inthe Elks Club annual free-throw shooting contest. Sarah GEIST, daughter of Crae and Jodi GEIST of Mount Ayr, took first place in the 12-13-year-old girls division at the Creston contest after taking first place in the local shooting event by making 16 of 25 shots. At the district contest in Red Oak, GEIST made 19 of 25 free-throws to tie forfirst place but lost the tie breaker to end up in second place -- not advancing to the next level.

Elevator inspector Marvin WHITLOCK gave the thumbs up on the use of the new courthouse elevator Tuesday. Mike GIVAN, a general contractor superintendent, took the Ringgold county board of supervisors, Ethel CAMPBELL, Lloyd BEDIER and Jim GOINS, for a ride on the elevator.

Two grants for $1,500 were received for area projects from South Central Iowa Community Foundation in presentations made last week. One of the recipients was the Upper Limits, the Ringgold county teen center in Mount Ayr, and the other was to the Diagonal Printing Museum in Diagonal.

An attendance challenge raised $2,000 for the Upper Limits, the Ringgold county teen center in Mount Ayr, over the past three monts. The Mount Ayr Record-News said it would donated $1 for every youth who visted the teen center beginning November 1. Attendance records show that there were 30 to 80 students attending the teen center per weekend evening. The Mount Ayr Record-News donated $1,000 which was matched by the Dekko Foundation.
