TINGLEY HIGH SCHOOL

Tingley Independent School District was formed in 1882 and the town's population reached around 600 residents in 1896. In 1885, the Tingley School District erected a school builging at the cost of $4,400. The new schoolhouse was used as a model for other schoolhouses that were built later on. An addition was built in 1901 as the town grew, creating an increase in pupils attending the school. This schoolhouse was in service to the community until a brick school was built in 1918. The second school house was torn down in 1980.

Tingley's 13th commencement exercises were held in the Tingley opera house with the 12 members of the graduating class of 1906 honored by a program consisting of orations and music. A capacity crowd of 425 people attended the event of which Reverend L. R. FREE delivered the opening invocation. The 1912 commencement exercises the largest paid event held in the opera house, bringing in $81.05 in receipts.

When Tingley closed its school, the students attended classes at Mount Ayr.

BOYS' BASKETBALL
The first Ringgold County Boys' Basketball Tournament was held February 28 - March 1st, 1919, at the Mount Ayr high school gymnasium. Tingley's team participated in this first tournament and all the other consecutive annual tournaments.

During the 1946 tournament, Tingley secured third place, defeating Mount Ayr in an overtime game.

The 1955-56 Tingley Boys' High School team was under the direction of Coach OBERMEIER. Members of the team were Von TULL, Jim McINTOSH, Hugh FERGUSON, bo CLYMER, Larry GILES, Jim JOBE, Jon O'NEIL, Melvin RICHARDS, Richard PALMER, Dean EIGHME, and Larry ENGLAND.

In 1957, Kellerton and Tingley were tied at 40 points after regulation play. Tingley's Hugh FERGUSON was the tournaments high scorer but Kellerton rallied in the second half, beating Tingley 48-42.

At last, in 1958, Tingley won the tournment championship, defeating Diagonal 47-43 with Larry GILES as Tingley's high scorer.

Tingley's SKARDA was named to the all-county first team at the 1939 Ringgold County Basketball Tournament.

Tingley won 3rd place over Mount Ayr in overtime play at the 1946 county tournament.

Tingley and Kellerton were tied at 40 points each after regulation play during the 1957 Ringgold County Basketball Tournament. Kellerton prevailed, winning 48-42. Tingley's Hugh FERGUSON ws the tournament high scorer.

The Tingley boys ultimately won the county championship in 1958, defeating Diagonal 47-43 with Larry GILES leading the team to victory.
