Lifetime service award to Ron Scott

Former Mount Ayr Community high school wrestling coach, Ron SCOTT was honored by Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association as one of the 2008 recipients of the association's Lifetime Service Award.

SCOTT was presented the award at the Iowa Chapter Honors Banquet held in Des Moines on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The other honor recipients were: Steve BAIER of Griswold, Larry RILEY of Greenfield, Dan MASHEK of Don Bosoc/North Scott, and Roger Williams of Decorah.

SCOTT was a prep wrestler in Tulsa, OK, before continuing his wrestling carerr at Northwest Missouri State University [Maryville, Missouri], where he was a two-year letter winner.

SCOTT began his teaching and coaching career at Mount Ayr Community in 1966. He was the Raiders' head coach for 30 years, compiling a 198-137-4 record.

He directed one undefeated team and had two others that suffered only one loss. A total of 57 Raiders, including his son, Jeff SCOTT, were state meet qualifiers.

Raider Curt BRABY was a state champion and several other young men were place winners under "Scotty's" tutelage.

Thirty Raiders continued their wrestling careers in college and five had become wrestling coaches including his son, Jeff, who coaches in Jackson, MO.

SCOTT was Southwest Iowa district coach of the year in 1984-85 and in 1994 was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association's Hall of Fame.

Colleagues and former wrestlers praise coach SCOTT for his leadership, committment, loyalty, and dedication to developing solid character. He helped organize the first state wrestling coaches and officials clinic.

SCOTT currently conducts workshops and meetings for the Institute of Character Development. Ron and his wife, Dana, still reside in Mount Ayr.
