ROSALIE (SHAY) & JOE McFARLAND FAMILY

Rosalie SHAY McFARLAND is the youngest of the four daughters of Lee and Teresa SHAY. She attended Marycrest College in Davenport and received a B.A. degree in speech and drama at the University of Iowa. Later she attended Briar Cliff College, specializing in elementary education.

She worked at radio stations KBIZ in Ottumwa, WOI in Amers and KSO in Des Moines. Her second career was as a kindergarten teacher in Sioux City and in Ottumwa. She retired in 1985.

In 1949 she married Joe McFARLAND.

Joe's college work was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army during which he received a 34th Division citation for outsanding performance in the line of duty and the Purple Heart when he was wounded in action at Anzio.

He subsequently received a B.S. in business administration at the University of Iowa and was last employed as manager of Plumb Wholesale Supply in Ottuwma. He retired in 1984.

Rosalie and Joe live in Ottumwa where their activies are many and varied.

They could probably qualify as #1 Hawkeye fans, since they have attended all the Bowl games in the era, but one.

Their children are Sheila (Mrs. Cary CARLSON) and Neil. Sheila and Neil and their spouses are lso U. of I. graduates. The Carlsons live in Muscatine where Gary is vice-president at Bandag Corporation. They have two children - Christopher (age 8) and Shay (age 5.

Neil is a staff pharmacist at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City. He and his wife Denise are the parents of Natalie (13), Breanna (4) and Laura (3).

NOTES: Joseph Nelson McFARLAND, son of Glenn E. and Kathryn E. (DISSINGER) McFARLAND, was born in Bouton, Iowa, September 13, 1919. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tec Sgt. in the 168th Company of the 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Division. Joseph died at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City at the age of 87 years on October 20, 2006. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.
