PIONEER LIFE of F. B. SOLES FAMILY

Ferdinand B. SOLES came to Ringgold county when ten-years-old, on April 18, 1855 with his parents. His father's name was Esuc SOLES. F. B. was born at Fort Wayne, Indiana, September 13, 1845. They lived for years just west of Caledonia.

At the age of sixteen years he enlisted in Company G, 4th Iowa Infantry, and fought in General THAYER'S Brigade, in General STEEL'S command, with Lieutenant Ellis C. MILLER, who was killed by a rebel bullet at Chicasaw Bayou, Mississippi, and buried there in a grave with three comrades. This was one of the hardest fought battles of the Civil War and their loss to the Company G 4th Iowa Infantry at that battle was one hundred and twenty men. Ferd B. SOLES was discharged July 24, 1865 from the Civil War.

F. B. SOLES' father built many houses in Ringgold County and in Mount Ayr as he was a good carpenter and in 1859 he helped on the frame court house in Mount Ayr.

After the War Ferd B. SOLES then worked with his father in the carpenter trade. He was married to Alice Melcina LORIMOR December 25, 1865. She was born at Barlow, Ohio, August 3, 1849, and moved with her [Milton LORIMOR (1822-1902) and Elizabeth (KIDWELL) LORIMOR] to Madison County, Iowa, in 1855. Then they moved to the northern part of Ringgold County in 1857.

In about 1870 Mr. SOLES moved his family to Mount Ayr where Mrs. SOLES died at the family home in east Mount Ayr on July 20, 1919. He lived with his daughter, Mrs. Iva M. SHROYER, for several years. But later in life Ferd went to California and died August 22, 1923, at the home of his only son, James F., in Hollywood, California.

Ferdnand B. and Alice M. (LORIMOR) SOLES were the parents of four daughters and one son:

Ella Elizabeth (SOLES) HAYES was born November 2, 1867; lives in Mount Ayr [d. 12 Jan 1944, Minneapolis MN; interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, IA; married 14 Oct 1855 Elmer Ellsworth HAYES (1863-1927)].

Iva Maude (SOLES) SHROYER was born October 31, 1870; lives in Mount Ayr [married Isaac Ross SHROYER].

Lota IIzora (SOLES) DRAPER was born May 19, 1873; lives in Long Beach, California [married Everett DRAPER].

James Ferdinand SOLES was born October 27, 1876; lives in Los Angeles, California [died 26 Mar 1945].

Thelma (Thalia?) Edith (SOLES) ENDSLEY was born November 26, 1878; lives in Cushing, Oklahoma [died 28 Sep 1955, MI; interrred Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr IA; married Alexander ENDSLEY, b. 29 Dec 1866, Danville IL; d. 1938, Oklahoma City OK; interred Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr IA].

There are living now, January 1, 1936, five children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

NOTE: Alice Melcina (LORIMOR) SOLES died July 20, 1919. Alice and Ferd were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
