Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa
Lewis Publishing Company, 1887. p. 337.

"L. D. SERGEANT, postoffice, Mt. Ayr, is one of the model farmers of Grant Township, where he is engaged in agricultural pursuits, on section 33. His farm, which contains 280 acres of well-cultivated land, is among the best in his township, his residence and farm buildings are commodious and convenient, and the entire surroundings of the place show the owner to be a thorough, practical farmer.

Mr. Sergeant is a native of Highland County, Ohio, born January 12, 1844, a son of W. C. and E. C. Sergeant, who were natives of Virginia and Ohio respectively. Our subject was reared from his boyhood agricultural pursuits, his youth being spent in assisting his father on the home farm.

He came to Ringgold County, Iowa, in the year 1871, since which he has lived on the farm where he yet resides, and during his residence in Grant Township has gained the confidence and respect of the entire community by his honorable and upright dealings.

For his wife he married Mary Crews, on March 20, 1875, who was born March 30, 1854, a daughter of J. M. and Mary Crews, natives of North Carolina. They are the parents of four children - Jasper N., born February 12, 1876; John D. and Louis E. (twins), born April 12, 1878, and Nellie, born October 27, 1883.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sergeant are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.

In politics he is a staunch Republican."
