MRS. M. GRAY RITES HELD AT HARTWICK

DIES AT MARSHALLTOWN HOSPITAL SATURDAY EVENING, JAN. 9

HARTWICK - Mrs. Martha Gray, long time resident of the Hartwick community, died at the Deaconess hospital, Marshalltown, Saturday, January 9, at 6:00 p.m. Her death was attributed to pneumonia and old age. She was 87.

In spite of her advanced. age, she had been very active and able to do her own housework in the home where she lived alone. About six weeks ago she went to Marshalltown with the intention of spending the winter with her daughter and grandchildren.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Collinson she was born in Knox county, Illinois, April 26, 1855. She grew to womanhood in Illinois where she was married to John Gray, Jan. 1, 1875. The couple later came to Iowa to farm in the Hartwick community. Seven children were born, namely, Homer of Toledo, John of Hartwick, Mrs. Carrie Hofer of Garwin, Mrs. Jennie Brees of Marshalltown, Mahlon, Mrs. Della Lambert and Mrs. Fannie Lyman. The later three preceded their mother in death. Her husband died March 26, 1903.

Mrs. Gray moved from the farm to her home in Hartwick where she had since made her home in April 1916. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Hartwick.

Besides her children, two brothers, Sam and Fred Collinson of Illinois, survive.

Funeral services were held at the Hartwick Congregational church at 2:30 on Monday afternoon with the Rev. Mr. Rhodes of Marshalltown officiating.

Burial was made at Kent cemetery in the family lot.
