Richard "Bush" Hasselbrink, 91, of Grinnell, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Muriel Johannessen officiating. Visitation will be held prior to his service beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Grinnell Elks Lodge, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared online with the family at www.smithfh.com.
Richard was born the son of William and Elsie (Henning) Hasselbrink on January 10, 1924, in Newton, Iowa. He attended country school in rural Jasper County, near Newton. The family moved to the Lynnville area and Richard attended Grinnell High School, where he graduated from with the class of 1944. While in high school, he got the nickname "Bushel" from his football coach.
He served in U.S. Navy on USS Essex in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on April 18, 1946, and began farming with his father. He was united in marriage on April 13, 1952, to Ruth Darlene Puls at the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Malcom, Iowa. They later moved to Grinnell and he was employed at Donaldson Company until his retirement in 1986.
Richard was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and served many years on the church council. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Club and spent many hours playing cards with his buddies. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, family trips, 4th of July Prince Street neighborhood picnics and golfing, and sitting outside visiting with friends and family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Hasselbrink of Grinnell; five children: Rick (Marilyn) Hasselbrink of Racine, Wis., Joyce Endres of Lincoln, Neb., Kathy (Lonnie) Fults of Kellogg, Iowa, Mike (Dana) Hasselbrink of Kellogg, Iowa, and Susan (Brad) Marlatt of Grinnell, Iowa; grandchildren: Jon (Katie) Hasselbrink of Kenosha, Wis., Jennifer (Dan) Wiseman of Kenosha, Wis., Matt Endres of Lincoln, Neb., Tommy Endres of Lincoln, Neb., Stephanie (Justin) Taylor stationed in Aviano, Italy, Luke (Coby Turner) Fults of Des Moines, Iowa, Zach (Rachel) Hasselbrink of Des Moines, Iowa, Tyler Hasselbrink of Kellogg, Iowa, Clinton Marlatt of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mitchell Marlatt of Grinnell, Iowa; great grandchildren: Madison, Dillon, and Isabelle Taylor, Connor and Kayla Wiseman, Payton and Gavin Hasselbrink, and Sloan Hasselbrink; and a sister, Doris Bryan of Lynnville, Iowa.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia and June; and three brothers, Edward, Donald and Wayne.
