Robert E. "Bob" Saunders, 88, of Grinnell, died August 25, 2017, at the Grinnell Health Care Center.
A graveside service and burial was held Wednesday, August 30, at Sheridan Cemetery, northeast of Grinnell, with Rev. Melinda Cree-Anthony officiating.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Health Care Center or Grinnell Regional Hospice.
Bob was born September 23, 1928, in Grinnell, the son of Frank and Hazel Anthony Saunders. He was raised in the Grinnell area and was a 1948 graduate of Newburg High School. He was employed from 1945 until 1952 with Norris & Hayes Plumbing in Grinnell.
Bob was inducted in the United States Marine Corps on April 17, 1952 and served for nearly two years during the Korean War. His rank was a corporal upon his Honorable discharge on December 1, 1953. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion.
On January 16, 1949, he was united in marriage with Mary Lou Norris, in Grinnell, where the couple made their home. He was employed with Triple S Plumbing for many years and later was self-employed. He also kept busy helping family member in farming. He retired in 1998.
Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Most weekends he could be found camping and fishing at Rock Creek Lake. He loved ice cream and playing bingo. For 15 years, he and Mary Lou wintered in the Mission and McClellan, Texas area.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of Grinnell; his sister-in-law, Jacque McClenathan of Victor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Owens and Jean Evans; and one brother-in-law, Daryl Norris.
