The Grinnell (IA) Herald
Dec. 28, 1897--Elmer Fawcett was born in Richland township, Jasper county, Iowa. He departed this life in Grinnell, Dec. 18th, 1897. Elmer was a stout, healthy boy until about three years ago he had scarlet fever, and Hoskins' disease set in. About two years ago he went to Iowa City and underwent a painful and dangerous operation on the right side of his face. Three large tumors were removed. A year ago he went the second time and four tumors were removed under the right arm. It was then discovered what the disease was, and that it was only a matter of time for him to live. He was able to be around town, until the last week he was taken with what was supposed to be a cold. He was about the house until the last five hours, when it was discovered the disease had gone to his heart. He passed away peaceably and was conscious to the last. During the summer he had made all his preparations. All his trinkets and toys he had given to members of the family. He had asked for certain ones to assist at the funeral. His every wish was gratified as near as possible. He was 16 yrs., 4 mos. and 15 days old. The funeral was held on Monday, Dec. 20, conducted by Rev. J.E. Corley. The flowers were beautiful tea roses and carnation pinks. Mrs. John Martin, of Iowa City, was present at the funeral. He leaves a father, mother, and other relatives to mourn his loss.
Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Fawcett an children wish to thank the many friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy during the sad hours of the death of their son and brother.
