MR. SISCO DIES ON FRIDAY

Shirley W. Sisco, 65, of 829 Pearl St., died suddenly Friday afternoon, Sept. 13, in Grinnell General Hospital of an apparent heart condition.

The son of Melvin and Onley Lewis Sisco, he was born on July 27, 1909 in Newburg, and attended the Grinnell schools before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1926. Following his discharge in 1930, he returned to Grinnell and worked at the Grinnell Planing Mill.

On Nov. 26, 1930, Mr. Sisco was married to Dorothy Mae Elliott. To this marriage four children were born, two of whom survive: Hollis L. Sisco and Mrs. Paul (Greta) Green, both of Grinnell.

During WWII, Mr. Sisco re-enlisted in the Navy, serving as a chief carpenter's mate until his discharge in 1945. He was one of the survivors of the USS Holister, which was sunk in battle.

Following his discharge, he was employed by the Weitz? and Lovejoy Construction Company on building projects at Grinnell College.

Mr. Sisco served as president of the local carpenter's union; as Past Commander of Focht- Tennant American Legion Post No. 53; as a member of the VFW; and of the DAV. He was also a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Since 1971, he had been in forced retirement, as a result of a stroke.

Mr. Sisco is survived by his wife Dorothy; his two children; and five grandchildren: Rick, Del, and Denise Green, and Hope and Buffy Sisco, all of Grinnell. Also surviving are four brothers: Lloyd of Hemet, Calif.; DeVerne of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and Mervin LeRoy and Melvin Frank, both of Anamosa, Ia. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two children, Wesley H. and Charles R., both in infancy, as well as one brother, Murel, who died at the age of 14.

Funeral services for Shirley W. Sisco were held at 1:30 this afternoon (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell K. Boersma, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Leonard Pearce. Pallbearers were Marion Gibson, Clarence Innis, Raymond French, LaVerne Olson, Richard Van Draska, and Keith Worthy.

Graveside rites were conducted by Edwin Richardson, chaplain, and Don Baker, commander, and members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Interment was in Rock Creek Cemetery (Jasper County).
