A.E. CLAY

At 9 o'clock Saturday morning, Dec. 4, death came to Anse Clay at the Methodist hospital, Des Moines, where he had been a patient since Sept. 20, and where he passed out of this life. His death was caused by heart lesion, which caused his life to slowly ebb away. His brother, I.N. Clay, of Casper, Wyo., was at his bedside when the end came.

Anson Edwin Clay was born in LaSalle county, Ill., Feb. 28, 1863. When he was 5 years of age he came with his parents, Lawrence and Hannah Clay to Iowa, and lived on a farm three miles north of Grinnell, where he resided until 17 years of age, and removed to Newburg in 1882. In 1894 he came to Gilman and seven years ago moved to Newton, which has since been his home. His parents died many years ago, and he has been preceded in death by three brothers, William, Ambrose B., his twin, and Albert F., and two sisters, Sarah J. and Dora. Surviving him are one brother, Irvin N. Clay of Casper, Who., three sisters, Mrs. Emily Squire of Grinnell, and Mesdames Hattie Newton and Alice Perry of Gilman.

Anse Clay was one of those big whole souled, honest fellows whom one could not help but like and esteem for his friendly and genial qualities. Especially was this true with those who knew him close up by association and long acquaintance. He was a charter member of Gilman Lodge, No. 360, K. of P., and a member of Gilman Camp, No. 2636, M.W.A., also a member of the Elks lodge of Newton. He was one of the members of the Gilman K. of P. lodge who was presented with a veteran's jewel a little over a year ago, having been a member for twenty-five years.

The remains were brought here Monday afternoon and taken to the O.E. Perry home. The funeral was held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Congregational church. Rev. Williams, pastor of the Newton Congregational church, assisted by Rev. John J.G. Graham, conducting the same. Many relatives and friends were present, among them the Knights of Pythias in a body. There were many beautiful floral offerings. Interment followed in Prairie View cemetery, the Knights of Pythias having charge of the burial service and Chaplain A.C. Anderson conducting same. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were I.N. Clay, Casper, Wyo; Mrs. Emily Squire, Mrs. A.E. Squire and daughters, Misses Florence and Lola, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Squire, and E.M. Clay, Grinnell; William G. Squire, Mitchellville; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bush, Brooklyn; Mr. and Mrs. F.H. McCarl, Mr. and Mrs. Claude McCarl, Newton; Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Clay, Grundy Center; J.F.
