June 10, 1859 --- January 1, 1934

H. M. WHITACRE

Funeral services for Harry M. Whitacre, dean of New Sharon merchants, were held at the Christian Church, Saturday afternoon. The Rev. George Blagg was in charge, assisted by the Rev. A. B. Cornell. Mr. Frank Swain sung two vocal numbers. Burial was in the north cemetery.

Harry M. Whitacre was born in Hanover, Ohio, June 10, 1859, the son of James Madison and Louisa Whitacre. When he was two years old, his father enlisted in the civil war and early in the winter of 1864, received a severe wound which resulted in his death in February. Two or three years later, Mrs. Whitacre with her small son joined her parents who were living on a farm near Brighton, Iowa. Later, she was married to James McCauley and moved to the vicinity of New Sharon.

Mr. Whitacre grew to manhood in this community. For several years he attended country school, then entered the New Sharon High School, being a member of the second graduating class.

In the year 1880, he entered the employ of Kramer and Graham as a clerk. After a few years of honest effort and close application to business, he formed a partnership with George Way and Will Hammond; this firm taking over the business in which Mr. Whitacre began his work. With a few changes in personnel, he continued this business for over fifty years.

February 22, 1882, he was married to Olive Brogan. To them were born two children, Max of Chicago, Ill., and Vera of this city. He passed way January 1, 1934, aged 74 years, 6 months and 21 days. He leaves in his immediate family, his wife; son, daughter, granddaughter and three sisters. Besides there, other relatives and many friends will feel an irreparable loss.
