Charles Kercheval, 92 of Montezuma passed away peacefully on November 8, 2008 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Montezuma. His body has been cremated. Memorial services will begin at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Memorials to be named at a later date.

Charles Edgar Kercheval, son of Clinton and Mary Maude (Bingham) Kercheval was born May 4, 1916 in Belmond, Iowa. He was a 1932 graduate of Rowan High School. Charles attended the University of Colorado, Iowa State Teacher's College and the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1940. On May 20, 1939 Charles was united in marriage to Wilma Krasche at the Krasche home in Perry, Iowa. To this union two children were born, John and David. Charles taught Jr. High School in Rippey, Iowa where he also coached Girls Basketball. He was also employed with Montezuma Consolidated School for one year. Charles enlisted in the United States Navy with rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer in 1943. He was commissioned as Ensign and released from active duty as a Lt. JG in 1946. In 1941 Charles joined the Montezuma State Bank and served the Bank continually other than time-out for three years of service in the Navy during World War II. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1951 and was elected President in 1974. Charles retired from the bank on January 8, 2008. He was a past member of the American Legion and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served as President of Jr. Chamber of Commerce, the Library Board, the City Treasurer and Director of the Montezuma Mutual Telephone Company. He also served on the Veterans Affairs Commission of Poweshiek County. Charles was an Elder and a Trustee for the Montezuma Presbyterian Church.

His memory is honored by his wife, Wilma of Montezuma; two sons, John (Sarah) Kercheval of Montezuma and David (Brenda) Kercheval of Montezuma; his brother, Dr. M. L. (Eileen) Kercheval of Grand Junction, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Dr. Deborah (Dan) Holte, Nicholas Kercheval, David Kercheval, Jamie (Patrick) Wisse, Joel (Tiffany) Kercheval, Laura Kercheval and Jacob Kercheval and 10 great grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Mary Maude Kercheval; a brother, Dr. James W. Kercheval; a grandson, Jimmy Kercheval and a granddaughter, Polly Kercheval.
