Rod Johnson, 71, of Grinnell, Iowa died on Friday, July 14, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael and Steven Hughes, Bradley Johnson, Jeff Neville, Ryan Thomasson, and Wade Wiand. Honorary bearers will be Brandon Cotton, Mario Kaehn, and Curtis Sieck. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 17, at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Rod Johnson Memorial Fund.

The son of Charles “Ted” and Ethel Kelley Johnson, he was born April 4, 1935, in Algona, Iowa, where he was raised and received his education. He was employed for several years at Universal Manufacturing in Algona. He moved to Grinnell in 1966 and was employed with Miracle Recreation and drove a truck for Grinnell Livestock. Rod was married to Helen Innis Hughes on February 12, 1971, in Brooklyn. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell and moved to Eagle Grove in 1973. While there he drove a truck for UMTHUN trucking and later ADS trucking. He also served as president of UTEA for several years while employed with UMTHUN. He retired in 2000 and the couple returned to Grinnell. Survivors include his wife, Helen of Grinnell; four step-children, Beverly Neville of Williamsburg, Pat Richardson of Grinnell, Sandra Hughes of Minneapolis, and Ronald Hughes of Everett, Washington; five sisters, Elizabeth Byrne of Algona, Virginia Baxter of Lone Rock, Lois Brinkema of Kamrar, Shirley Metzger of Ames, and Janell Kickbush of Clear Lake; two brothers, Curtis Johnson of Grinnell and Robert Johnson of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charlie and Kenny Johnson; and three sisters in infancy, Darlene, Marion and Joann.
