ETHEL IRENE BURNS

Ethel Irene Burns, 84, of 5103 Ovid, Des Moines, died January 20, 1987 at her home. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

She was born in Andalusia, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Ina Rouse Shaffer. She taught History, Home Economics, English and Drama for 30 years in high schools in Deep River, Bonaparte, LeRoy, Laurel, Garwin, Pierson, Sheldahl and Garrison, retiring in 1967. She moved to Des Moines ten years ago.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Iowa State Teachers Assn., and the University of Northern Iowa Alumni Assn.

Survivors include two sons: Dr. Robert L. Burns of Fort Worth, Texas and Dr. Richard D. Burns of Elkhart, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence Shaffer of Charles City. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.W. Burns.

Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines, with graveside rites at 3:00 p.m. at Goldenrod Cemetery, Deep River.
